About Department Of Agricultural Economics
Economics is a social science that studies the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. Economics focuses on the behavior and interactions of economic agents and how economy works. It enquires how man gets his income and how he uses it. To understand the principles of economics and application of these economic principles to agricultural students, agriculture economics section was established as separate discipline in agriculture colleges in 1925. After the establishment of Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth., Rahuri in 1969, the section of Agricultural Economics, Pune itself culminated into a full-fledged Department of Agricultural Economics at the central campus, MPKV., Rahuri.
Department of Agricultural Economics entrusted with the major responsibilities of teaching, research and extension in the subjects of Agricultural economics and agribusiness management. The department is pioneer in farm cost studied, agricultural marketing and socio- economic survey. Since the inception of the agricultural college, the agricultural economics courses were offered to undergraduated students. Agricultural economics is the branch of economics, which deals with all aspects of problems related to agriculture.
The basic courses of Agricultural Economics offered at undergraduate level are related to the areas of Fundamental of Economics, Agricultural Finance and Cooperation, Agricultural Marketing, Trade and Prices, Agri-business Management and Farm Management, Production and Resource Economics. The practical exercises concerning to techno-economic surveys, cost studies and farm planning are covered through a RAWE Programme in Agricultural Economics.
Department of Agricultural Economics, Jaywantrao Bhosale Krishna College of Agriculture., Rethare Bk, is well developed with all infrastructural facilities. There are two well qualified and experienced faculties to conduct all courses offered to undergraduated students. Agricultural economics is a social science, so there is no practical work just like to other sciences. Agricultural Economics laboratory is well developed with all facilities of electricity, power point presentation and good ventilation. It is decorated with important charts and photographs such as classification of market, classification of credit, 7 types cost curves, law of equi-marginal utility and law of diminishing marginal utility etc, which are useful to students to understand the important topics of their syllabus. In practical section, there are also visits to some institutes such as APMC, Warehouses. These visits are really exciting experience for the students and they learn a lot about working of particular institute.
